SPORTS HEROES STRUGGLE

Several athletes train with discipline by implementing strict health protocols amid a pandemic, drops of sweat dripped down, and shouts of encouragement echoed through the room. They prepare physically and mentally to face the XX National Sports Week (PON) in Papua.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made athletes adapt to new habits by training independently at home. The training program is packaged according to conditions to maintain the fitness, stamina, and performance of the athletes who will compete in the four-yearly event.

The implementation of the Papua PON is Indonesia's benchmark in the world's eyes in carrying out multi-event activities amid a pandemic. XX PON is attended by 34 local contingents, with the number of athletes reaching 7.039. They competed in 37 sports and won 681 gold medals, 681 silver medals, and 877 bronze.

Activities involving athletes and volunteers from various regions are prosperous and successful without any disturbance. Thousands of athletes come from all over the country to eastern Indonesia to compete and make achievements.

President Joko Widodo emphasizes that the event has significant meaning for all Indonesian people as a stage for equality, unity, justice, and shared prosperity within the Unitary State framework Republic of Indonesia in his opening speech for PON Papua.

For athletes, a pandemic is never a reason to discourage them from training, developing, and progressing. Limitations are not an obstacle but a motivation to stay healthy and achieve. They are sports heroes who keep working, training hard, and full of discipline to compete to be the best.

In essence, a true champion is not one who never loses but always rises, without knowing the words surrender and despair.
